John McAllen Obituary

HOWLAND – John Banks McAllen, 94, of Howland passed away Wednesday evening, February 7, 2024, at his residence with his loving family by his side.

Mr. McAllen, who was known by Jack, was born in Youngstown Friday, April 5, 1929 and was a son of Edward Leroy and Irene Banks McAllen and was a lifelong member of the community.

He was the general and district manager for the former Hills Department Stores in the valley for 29 years, retiring in 1991. After retirement he was employed by Diamond Men’s Store and S & K Menswear.

He was a member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish in Vienna, the American Legion Post 0700 In Howland and enjoyed his trips to the cottages in Madison, Ohio and in Florida.

Mr. McAllen was United States Air Force veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a recipient of the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation.

Mr. McAllen was a 1947 graduate of Ursuline High School and attended Youngstown College. He was a staunch supporter of Notre Dame Football, always looking forward to going to the games and a fan of all Cleveland sports.

Mr. McAllen leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of over 70 years, the former Nancy Ann Knott whom he married September 5, 1953; his children, Ellen Marie (David) Tepsick of Canfield; Michael (girlfriend Diann Federici) McAllen of Mentor; Elizabeth Ann (Mark) Veca of Ridgewood, New Jersey; and John F. (Vicki) McAllen of Madison; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Besides his parents Mr. McAllen was preceded in death by a brother, Edward (Patricia) McAllen and a sister, Patricia (Francis) Lyden.

The family will receive relatives and friends Monday, February 12, 2024 in Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, 291 Scoville Drive, Vienna, Ohio 44473 from 10 a.m. to Noon immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial.
