YOUNGSTOWN – Robert L. Shannon, 87, of Youngstown passed away early afternoon Sunday, January 7, 2024 at Park Vista of Youngstown with his loving family by his side.
Mr. Shannon was born Thursday, July 30, 1936 in Youngstown and was a son of John and Catherine Collins Shannon and was a lifelong member of the community.
He worked for Steel Tank for many years but retired early to become the caretaker for his parents. He was a former member of St. Edward Parish, was a fan of Notre Dame football and a member of the US Army.
Mr. Shannon was a good soul and left a huge legacy on the north side of Youngstown and especially the Wick Park area where he would walk his dogs’ numerous times around the park and would go to Park Vista and walk their dog Honey every day. What was utterly amazing as he would walk the dogs, he would always have a bag of peanuts for the squirrels in Wick Park. The squirrels knew what time Mr. Shannon was coming because they would literally take the peanuts from his hand and as it was a daily occurrence for many years and his love for Wick Park was even displayed on his license plates as they read “Wick Park.”
He leaves to cherish his memory, his sister, Donna Jenkins and her children, Charles Jenkins; Susan Beede; Kristen Unger, several more nieces and nephews and a brother Bob (Nina) Kenney.
Besides his parents, Mr. Shannon was preceded in death by his brothers, Jackie Shannon and his wife Rosamond, Bill Shannon and his wife Mary Jane, and a brother-in-law, Charles Jenkins.
Private services were held Saturday, January 13, 2024 celebrated by Reverend Father Edward Noga at The McCauley Funeral Home.
