Elizabeth Flannery Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN -Elizabeth Anne McLaughlin Flannery, 97, passed away on October 23, 2018 at Mercy Health in Youngstown from complications following surgery.
She was born on January 17, 1921, the fifth child of Vincent and Elizabeth McEvoy McLaughlin’s ten children.
She attended St. Edward’s School and graduated from The Rayen School in 1938. Following high school, she was a secretary at The City Loan and Savings Co. where she met her future husband, Frank A. Flannery. She also worked during the War as a “Rosie the Riveter” at Commercial Shearing & Stamping Co.
Anne and Frank were married on June 26, 1943. When he joined the Army Air Corps during World War II, she followed him as an Army wife. They eventually settled in Akron and were founding members of St. Hilary Church. She kept books for her husband’s businesses.
Anne was a founder of the Fairlawn Park Garden and Civic Center and an honorary member of Little Flower Garden Club in Akron.  Anne had an exceptional talent for arranging flowers, often winning blue ribbons and Best of Show with her creations.
In 1963 she began modeling, at age 42, for major department stores including O’Neil’s and Polsky’s of Akron, as well as Halle’s, Higbee’s, May Co. and Saks Fifth Ave.
Anne volunteered at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron for 24 years, serving one term as president.
In 2010, she moved back to Youngstown and became an active member of the Park Vista community, serving terms as treasurer and secretary of the Residents Association. Anne was a member of the Mahoning Garden Club and was President in 2018.
She enjoyed golf, bridge and gardening, and loved the many dogs and cats she had over the years. She liked to travel and made trips to Paris, Tanzania, and a five-country trip around the world which she won in a sweepstakes. She was devoted to her family and never knew a stranger, only friends she hadn’t met.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; her siblings Mary Helen (John A. ) McMahon of Niles, OH, Vincent (Margaret) McLaughlin of Poland, OH, Kathleen “Kay” (Frank) Heames of Phoenix, AZ, Rita (James) Ryan of Xenia, OH, Lenore (Tammy Kerrigan, Jim Nagle) Kerrigan Nagle, and Suzanne (Charles E.) Johnson, both of Youngstown, OH.
She leaves to treasure her memory her daughter, Susan (John) Hoffman of Port Charlotte, FL, siblings James K. McLaughlin, Jeanne Foley and Richard P. (Betty) McLaughlin, all of Youngstown, and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
