LIBERTY TWP – A Memorial Services will be Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 11 a.m. in Church Hill United Methodist Church for Shirley Mae Olson, 77, who passed away Sunday evening at her home with her family by her side.

Mrs. Olson was born in Youngstown on Oct. 10, 1941 and was a daughter of Marlin and Mae Mary Lillian Bailey Clouser and was a lifelong member of the community.

Mrs. Olson was a graduate of Liberty High School and a graduate of Youngstown State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Education, graduating cum laude, and awarded two teaching certificates in elementary and high school English.

Mrs. Olson was a teacher at Youngstown North High School, Warren Western Reserve High School, W.S. Guy in Liberty Township and retired in 2008 from the Liberty Township High School and the Ohio Teacher’s System. She also worked as a dispatcher and Chief’s secretary for the Liberty Police Department and was  also employed by the W. T. Grant Company at the Liberty Plaza Store.

She was a member of the Liberty Township Disaster Service from its inception until 2005, Student National Education Association, taught Sunday school for special needs children, volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, member of the Liberty Parents Association, service to seniors through Youngstown Council of Churches, trustee for Church Hill United Methodist Church and volunteered at Liberty Arms Assisted Living. Mrs. Olson also was a member of the Liberty Historical Society, Kappa Delta Pi Sorority and Church Hill United Methodist Church.

Among her numerous hobbies, Mrs. Olson especially enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing bridge, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and picture puzzles. However, her favorite passion was gardening in which Mrs. Olson and her husband, James, shared a love with and possibly had one of the most beautiful yards in the area.

Mrs. Olson leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, James D. Olson, Jr. whom she married November 25, 1964, daughters, Sharon (Charles) North of McLean, Virginia and JoAnn (James) Brady of Kansas City, Missouri; a daughter of her heart, Wanda (Dr. Matthew) Yerkey of Salem; grandchildren, Sarah Mae North; Sarah (Justin) Parmenter; Erica (Liam) Voth; Joseph Brady; Christopher Brady; Ryan Yerkey and Avery Yerkey

Besides her parents, Mrs. Olson was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Clouser and grandsons, John Brady and Blair Yerkey.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Church Hill United Methodist Church.

The family has requested that contributions may be made to Liberty Arms Assisted Living Activities Department, Attn: Sheila Noyes, 1353 Churchill Hubbard Road, Youngstown, Ohio 44505 and/or Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Youngstown, Ohio 44512.
