HUDSON - Carmen Anthony Naples, 94, passed away Friday Aug. 14, 2015. Carmen was born February 16, 1921 in Youngstown, Ohio, son of Andrew and Mary Carmen Agnone Naples.
He was a 1938 graduate of The Rayen School. He attended The Ohio State University and played center and guard. He lived his life as a champion and was a proud member of the 1942 Ohio State National Championship football team, the school's first. On October 19, 2003 Mr. Naples along with eighteen members of the 1942 championship team received their rings from former OSU football coach Jim Tressel.
Carmen was a World War II Army veteran and served as an instructor at Fort Bragg attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Carmen, with his brother, Ralph, passionately continued the tradition that his parents set before them of owning and operating the Golden Dawn Restaurant which was established in 1934. He devoted a great deal of his time to the Golden Dawn Restaurant, a melting pot of all things Youngstown.
Mr. Naples was a father of seven children, 26 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. He was a member of St. Edward Parish, serving on its finance committee, parish council, and Men's Mission Club. Carmen was also a great supporter of Ursuline High School.
He leaves to cherish his memory, sons, T. Gregory (Kathleen) of Hudson; R. William of Hudson and Dr. Patrick (Sandy) of Medina; daughters, Mary Ann (Rick) Vogt of Hudson; Mary Louise Julian of Cortland; Judy (Doug) Soeder of Sagamore Hills and Carolyn (John) Barry of Liberty; brother, Ralph; sister, Antoinette Hutson; and several nieces and nephews.
Other than his parents Mr. Naples was preceded in death by his loving wife, the former Patricia Naughton who passed away November 29, 2008; sisters, Carmel (Timothy) Curtin; Magdalene (Edward) Acklin and Josephine (Frank) Forde; a brother, John; and a sisters in law, Kay Naples and Ida Naples
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward Church celebrated by Monsignor Robert Siffrin. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at St. Edward Church and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday also at St. Edward Church, 240 Tod Lane, Youngstown 44504.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that contributions may be made to St. Edward Parish, 240 Tod Lane, Youngstown, Ohio 44504.
