YOUNGSTOWN—Dan Gallagher, 94, of the city's north side and formerly of Sampson Road, died on Friday, March 27, surrounded by his loving family.
Dan was born the second of five boys on September 18, 1920, to Patrick and Marie Reardon Gallagher.
He was a 1938 graduate of Ursuline High School. He attended the University of Detroit for two years prior to his enlistment in July 1943 in the US Navy V12 Officer Training Program at the University of Illinois. He was honorably discharged in July 1946, after serving as a naval officer in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
He worked as a draftsman at Commercial Shearing then as an Electrical Engineer for McKay Machine Company which became Wean United. In this position, he was able to travel extensively in Europe, Japan and South America working on projects for General Motors, Fiat and Renault.
Dan married the former Rosemary Lang on May 16, 1959 and they had two spectacularly beautiful children.
He was a lifelong member of St. Edward Parish and an active member of the Ursuline High School Community. A proud supporter of the Ursuline Booster Club, he volunteered countless hours to Ursuline where everyone knew him. He also served as the Irish Show Director for over 10 years.
He was an avid sports fan especially of Ursuline and Notre Dame football. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed oil painting, travel, working in his yard and meeting friends for lunch at the Golden Dawn Restaurant.
Dan was preceded in death by his wife Rosemary, who died on February 24, 1983 and by his brothers: Jack, Robert and William; his brother in law James and sister in law Catherine.
His is survived by a daughter Maggie of California; a son John (Michele) of Columbus, a brother Bert (Roseann) of North Carolina and his sister in law Helen Lang with whom he made his home in Boardman over the past two years.
The family would like to thank the MVI staff and hospice team for the excellent care they provided to him over the past two months.
Family and friends may call from 5-7pm, Tuesday, at the McCauley Funeral Home and from 10-11:15am, Wednesday, at St. Edward Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 am.
