Edward J. Hulme Obituary
August, 26, 2013
Youngstown lost one of its most loyal citizens on Saturday, August 24, 2013. Edward J. Hulme passed away peacefully at Assumption Nursing Home surrounded by his family. He was just a few weeks from his 91st birthday.
Ed's life was defined by his loyalty and service to that which he held dear: his family, his faith, his country, his community and his career.
He was born in Youngstown on September 11, 1922 to Daniel and Ellen Canavan Hulme. He attended St. Ann School and was a 1939 graduate of The Rayen School and a 1947 graduate of The Ohio State University, where he studied business.
Ed ran track at Rayen and at Ohio State. He was a member of the 1942 Big Ten Championship team and was awarded the "Varsity O". Ed was also an avid tennis player on the courts of Wick Park, Crandall Park, Volney Rogers and the Liberty Racquet Club. In 1988, he was inducted into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame for his track accomplishments.
Ed leaves behind a large family: the former Helen Marie Lamb, his wife of 64 years, his children, Mary of Youngstown, Edward Jr. of Lake Milton, Thomas (Dayna) of Nashville, TN, Anne Stocking (Carl) of Westfield, NJ and Geoffrey (Daryl) of Greenwich, CT. He also leaves nine grandchildren: Kelsey Webb Kindig (Patrick), Courtney and Alexandra Hulme, Elisabeth, Teddy and Caroline Stocking and Quinn, Colin and Lance Hulme.
Ed was an active member of St. Columba Cathedral Parish, having served as a lector for many years.
He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II as a paratrooper instructor at Fort Benning, GA., and obtained the rank of second lieutenant. During the Korean War, Ed was also a Training Aides Officer and served at Fort Campbell, KY.
Ed loved Youngstown. He was a 54-year member of the Youngstown Rotary Club, and was president in 1968. He was recognized with one of Rotary's highest honors, the Paul Harris Fellow. Ed was a founder, president and long-time board member of the Youngstown Boys and Girls Club. He also served for many years as a board member for the Millcreek Children's Center. In 1976, Ed was the executive director of the Youngstown Area's Bicentennial Celebration. He was active in numerous other organizations throughout the years, including Junior Chamber of Commerce and Junior Achievement. Ed was instrumental in starting the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter at Youngstown State University, having been an SAE member and president at Ohio State. In 1996, he was presented the Brotherhood Award by the B'nai B'rith, the Knights of Columbus and the Free and Accepted Masons for his many years of dedication and service to his church, community projects and youth programs in the Mahoning Valley.
After graduating from Ohio State, Ed returned to Youngstown and held various positions at the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce, Servomation Corporation, St. Elizabeth Medical Center and the Youngstown Area United Way. He retired from the Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2007.
Ed was predeceased by his son John, his parents, his brother William and his sister Anna Marie Mansfield.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, August 28 at St. Columba Cathedral from 4-7 pm, and on Thursday from 9:00 – 9:45 am. Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 am. Internment, with full military honors, will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Millcreek Children's Center, 44 Essex Street, Youngstown OH, 44502, or Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Youngstown OH, 44512.
Ed was blessed to be assisted by wonderful caregivers in the later years of his life. The Hulme family thanks you for your loving hands and warm hearts as you assisted our parents. We are especially grateful to Mary Ellen and Pam.
The Ohio State alma mater, "Carmen Ohio", includes the words "time and change will surely show, how firm thy friendship". Ed certainly remained true to his family, friends and Youngstown throughout his long, accomplished life.
Thank you, dad, for being our example of loyalty and service. Thank you for being our "Original Buckeye" and for starting our tradition of enjoying all things scarlet and gray. As yet another football season approaches, we will miss you sitting in your chair, wearing your Ohio State ball cap, cheering on the team and the school that meant so much to you. "GO BUCKS!"
