A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Edward Church on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Msgr. Robert Siffrin Celebrant for Josephine Anna Wainio, 85, who passed away peacefully Sunday evening October 6 surrounded by her family.
Born March 20, 1928 in Youngstown, she was the daughter of Elizabeth (Figlia) and John Petruzzi and a 1946 graduate of East High School. She married William M. Wainio Jr., at Immaculate Conception Church on July 30, 1949. Josephine, a homemaker, supported her husband Bill through the years as bookkeeper for his various businesses.
She enjoyed baking, especially her white buttermilk birthday cakes, having her family around her, family vacations to Canada and the Outer Banks, trips to South Bend to see Notre Dame football, her children and grandchildren's activities, and as an avid sports fan cheering on the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, and the Ursuline Irish. She looked forward to hosting Christmas Eve dinner, Easter morning breakfast and family picnics. She instilled in her children her love of the Catholic faith and was proud that all eight of them attended Catholic grade school and were graduates of Ursuline High School.
Besides her beloved husband Bill of 64 years, Josephine leaves to cherish her memory her eight children and their spouses, JoAnne (Gerald) Nunziato, William III (Jean) Wainio, Jeanne (James) Prior, George (Carol) Wainio, Thomas (Donna) Wainio, Janet (David) Christoff, Joyce Anne Wainio (John Fulcher), and Anthony (Cynthia) Wainio. Her grandchildren, Thomas (Stacy) Nunziato, Gerald (fiancé Rhiannon Von Hofen) Nunziato Jr, Christina (James) Thompson, Anna, Kevin and Katherine Prior, Leanne and Danielle Wainio, Zachary, Veronica and Madeline Christoff, Isabel and Hannah Fulcher, William and Emily Wainio and four great-children, Dominic and Rocco Nunziato and Julia and Jacob Thompson, her sister Betty (Jim) Sferra, brother-in-law Edward Wainio and numerous nieces and nephews. Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Guy Petruzzi and her sisters Katherine Petruzzi and Becky Scudier.
The family would like to express its sincere thanks to Tina Fosnaught, Carol Basinger, and Andrea Squeglia Padach for their comforting care and loving support these past months.
Family and friends may call on Thursday from 3-7p.m. and on Friday from 9:30-10 45 a.m. at St. Edward Church on 240 Tod Lane in Youngstown. Contributions may be made in Josephine's name to Ursuline High School (750 Wick Ave., Youngstown, OH 44505) Adopt-A-Student or St. Edward's Church.
