Sister Rose Schaffer, H.M. (formerly Sr. Mary Aquinas) 84, died Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Villa Maria Community Center, Villa Maria, Pa. Born in Youngstown, she graduated from Chaney High School and entered the Sisters of the Humility of Mary Congregation in 1949 from St. Brendan Parish.
Sister Rose was principle at Villa Maria High School, and in 1970 established The Center for Learning to create and market value-based teacher materials. The Center expanded its scope of materials for teachers and had a world-wide distribution when Sister Rose served as its president and CEO from 1970-2008.
The daughter of the late John and Dina (Schoeppner) Schaffer and sister of the late Florence, Veronica, Joseph, William, Fred and Edward Schaffer, Clara Keevey, Hilda Bowser and Sr. Mary Ida Schaffer, HM. She is survived by her brother Henry Schaffer of Pensacola, Florida, many nieces and nephews and their families, and her Sisters in the Humility of Mary Congregation with whom she shared her life for 64 years.
Funeral Monday, September 30 at 3pm at Villa Maria Chapel, Villa Maria, Pa. Friends may call at Villa Maria Chapel Sunday, September 29, 3-5 and 6-8pm and Monday, September 30, 1-2:30pm. Prayer service at 7:00pm Sunday, September 29.
