CANFIELD - Sister Betty Schuster, OSU, of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, died on October 16 after a seven year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born in Rockville Centre, NY on June 23, 1956, the daughter of Albert and Emily (Costello) Schuster.
She attended St. Barnabas Elementary School in Bellmore, NY and graduated from Wantagh High School in Wantagh, NY. She received an Associate Degree in Physical Education from Nassau Community College, in 1976 and a BS in Physical Education in 1979 and a Master's Degree in Health Science in 1989 from Adelphi University. After spending two years in Youngstown as an Ursuline Companion in Mission at Beatitude House, she entered The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown on October 8, 1994 and professed her final vows on August 6, 2000.
Before coming to Youngstown Sister Betty taught physical education at St. Joseph School in Hewlett, NY. She was the Administrative Assistant at Holy Family School in Poland from 1994-95 before moving to New Hope Academy in Youngstown, where she taught for two years and was the Assistant Principal for three years. In 2001, Sister Betty established the child advocacy program at Beatitude House and became its first Child Advocate. In 2007 she was named Associate Director of Beatitude House where she served until August 2013.
Sister Betty leaves her sisters in the community; two brothers, Donald (Patty) of Wantagh, NY and Jack of Bellmore, NY; her sister-in-law, Linda Schuster Dewey, her aunt, Sister Barbara Costello, CND of Dobbs Ferry, NY and several nieces and nephews in New York. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert; and a nephew, Daniel.
Funeral services will be held at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 4250 Shields Road in Canfield on Saturday, October 19. Friends may call from 9:30 am. until 11:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 12:00 noon. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery on Monday, October 21 at 9:30 a.m.
