CORTLAND – A Service of Remembrance will be 6 p.m. Thursday at The McCauley Funeral Home for Sonny Edward Lawson, 66 0f Cortland who passed away Monday morning at his daughter's home.
He was born on December 8, 1947, in Slab Rock, West Virginia, a son of Theodore and Ida O'Neal Lawson. An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he was awarded National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars.
Following his discharge he lived in New York doing construction work on the World Trade Center buildings. He also resided in South Carolina before coming to the Mahoning Valley in the late 70's.
A self-employed mechanic, Sonny found a career as a truck driver and he was employed by several companies in the area including: Ohio Fast Freight, Can Am, Ted Howell and Twin Bay Trucking where he recently had retired. He was as avid hunter and fisherman.
Sonny leaves a daughter, Patricia (Jason) Tringhese of Youngstown and a son, Jerry Lawson of Hubbard; five grandchildren: Kevin Lawson, Ashley Price, Ryan and Sadie Tringhese and Chloe Martin; sisters: Mary Jane Harner, Jessie White, Shrilda White, Orphie Lilly, Edith White and Mabel Williams; brothers: Thomas Lawson and Willis Lawson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Shawn Price and sisters: Gloria Nixon and Janice Meadows.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-5:50 Thursday at the funeral home.
