AUSTINTOWN – Veronica D. Slifka Hura, 98, formerly of South Beverly Avenue passed away peacefully Saturday morning.
Mrs. Hura, who was known by many as Vennie, was born on July 31, 1916 in Youngstown and was a daughter of Stephen and Marie Willow Slifka and was a lifelong member of the community.
Mrs. Hura was a member of Saint Joseph Church in Austintown, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild, Infant Jesus Guild, Goldenagers, and volunteered for the Footprints Organization and was a life time member of First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. Mrs. Hura will be fondly remembered by many for her delicious baked goods such as her apple pies and kolachi, along with her wonderful homemade stuffed cabbage. Over the course of raising her family, Mrs. Hura also volunteered her time assisting the needs of the Humility of Mary Nuns at St. Brendan Church in Youngstown and Villa Maria in Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Hura was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Hura, whom she married June 20, 1939 and who passed away April 11, 1987.
Mrs. Hura is survived by her children, Richard (Cathy) Hura of Canfield; Mary Ann (Michael) Sapone of Prescott Valley, Arizona; Elaine Beatty of Boardman and JoAnne (Paul Michael) McCauley also of Boardman; brothers, Cyril Slifka of Liberty Township and John Slifka of Dewey, Connecticut; grandchildren, Attorney Richard (Alexis) Hura; Holly (John) Harrington; John Sapone; Steven Sapone; Mark Beatty; Meredith McCauley; Matthew McCauley; Kristen Morris and John G. Hura, Jr.; and eight great grandchildren.
Beside her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John G. Hura; sisters, Mary Louise Grossman and Virginia Oehling; brother, Adrian Slifka; a daughter in law, Patricia Cellio Hura and a great granddaughter, Lily Rose Hura.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, 4545 New Road Austintown, 44515.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the McCauley Funeral Home and from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Friday at the church.
