LIBERTY TWP. - William M. Wainio Jr., 86, passed away peacefully Friday evening February 20 surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

Born June 1, 1928 in Youngstown he was the son of Anna (Sferra) and William M. Wainio.

He married the love of his life Josephine Petruzzi at Immaculate Conception Church on July 30, 1949, and deeply mourned her passing October 6, 2013.



Bill worked at General Fireproofing before joining his father in their family business, Wainio's Food Market in Smoky Hollow. He also owned and operated Lincoln Knolls (Isaly) Dairy, My Dad's Restaurant, and My Dad's Flat Iron Café. He enjoyed hosting the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club at his home, taking his family on vacations to Canada and the Outer Banks, NC and attending his children and grandchildren's activities.  As an avid sports fan, he enjoyed cheering on the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, Notre Dame Football and the Ursuline Irish. An excellent cook and caterer, for over 50 years he hosted Christmas Eve dinner, Easter morning breakfast, and family picnics for all of his extended family and friends.



He and his wife Josephine, members of St. Edward Parish, were models in their Catholic faith and instilled their beliefs in their children. Bill was an Honorary Life 3rd Degree Member in the Knights of Columbus Council 12756.



Bill leaves to cherish his memory his eight children, JoAnne (Gerald) Nunziato, William III (Jean) Wainio, Jeanne (James) Prior, George (Carol) Wainio, Thomas (Donna) Wainio, Janet (David) Christoff, Joyce Anne Wainio (John Fulcher), and Anthony (Cynthia) Wainio. His grandchildren, Thomas (Stacy) Nunziato, Gerald (Rhiannon) Nunziato Jr, Christina (James) Thompson, Anna, Kevin (fiancé Melanie Chapekis), and Katherine Prior, Leanne and Danielle Wainio, Zachary (fiancé Shannon Smrek), Veronica and Madeline Christoff, Isabel and Hannah Fulcher, William and Emily Wainio and four great-children, Dominic and Rocco Nunziato and Julia and Jacob Thompson, his sister-in-law Elizabeth (James) Sferra, brother Edward (Naomi) Wainio of San Diego, CA and numerous Petruzzi, Scudier, and Sferra nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents.



Family and friends may call on Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Friday at St. Edward Church on Tod Lane in Youngstown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the church on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Msgr. Robert Siffrin.  Interment will follow at Belmont Cemetery.
