VILLA MARIA, PA - Sister Celine Metzger, H.M., 87, the former Agnes Metzger, died Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Villa Maria Community Center, Villa Maria, PA. Born in Shelby, Ohio, she graduated from Villa Maria High School, Villa Maria PA in 1949 and entered the Sisters of the Humility of Mary Congregation in 1950.
Sr. Celine dedicated 62 years to ministerial service as a congregational leader, educator, administrator and mission integration director. She served as major superior of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary from 1989-1997.
She served as a pastoral minister at St. Elizabeth Hospital from 1974-80 and was director of mission effectiveness at the Assumption Village, North Lima from 1998-2000. Sr. Celine was director of mission integration for Humility of Mary Health Partners at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown from 2000-2007 and continued to volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s until 2010. Prior to her two terms as major superior Sr. Celine was administrator of Villa Maria Community Center from 1981-89.
In 2009 she joined her sisters in the HM Ministry of Prayer at Villa Maria Community Center, Villa Maria PA, a ministry in which she served until her death.
The daughter of the late Clement and Mary (nee Sutter) Metzger, she is survived by her sisters Loretta Paskert and Lucy Rietschlin and brothers James Metzger and Joseph Metzger and their families and by her sisters in the Humility of Mary Congregation with whom she shared her life for 69 years. She was also preceded in death by her sisters Nellie Young and Rosemary Keller and her brothers Fr. Clement Metzger, SJ and Hubert, Carl, Leo and John Metzger.
Funeral Wednesday, May 1 at 10:30 am at Villa Maria Chapel, Villa Maria PA. Friends may call at Villa Maria Chapel Tuesday, April 30, 3:30-7pm and Wednesday, May 1, 9:30-10:15am. Prayer service at 7:00pm Tuesday, April 30.
